The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire


Standards:

Standard 1: The student understands historical chronology and the historical perspective. (SS.A.1.4)

Standard 2: The student understands the world in spatial terms. (SS.B.1.4)

Standard 3: The student understands the world from its beginnings to the time of the Renaissance.(SS.A.2.4)


Objectives:
  • The student will be able to identify and label a web created flow map of historical events and order them in correct chronological order using the flow map to create a short video showing the world’s history in order starting with the Roman Empire up to Current Day with an accuracy of 95% based teacher verifying facts and timeline.
  • The student will be able to construct a brochure that includes geography, points of interest and brief history of the Roman Empire for new residents to the area with an accuracy of 95% based on a rubric for the assignment.
  • The student will be able to describe the importance of the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire and its culture creating a website to share their findings with an accuracy of 95% based on a rubric for the assignment.
  • The student will be able to analyze by writing a report on the Roman Empire their importance and role played in shaping the world we know today with at least an accuracy of at least 87% based on a rubric for the assignment.
  • In groups the students will be able to invent a game showing the domination that the Roman Empire had on the civilizations around them with their fellow students being able to participate easily 85% of the time based on a rubric of the assignment.
  • The student will be able to assess their comprehension of the timeline of world events and the Rise and fall of the Roman Empire through an online PowerPoint quiz with a score of at least 100% based on completion of the quiz.

Preparations and Equipment needed:
Students will require to complete this week’s assignments.
  1. Their school provided laptop computer
  2. Their flash drives
  3. Their log in information for their personal Wikispace account
  4. Poster board
  5. Marker
  6. Materials to use to create game pieces.
  7. Access to the classroom printer

The teacher will need to provide:
  1. Worksheets on the Roman Empire (1 per student)
  2. TV/DVD player to show movie while students work on their assignments
  3. Markers, Colored Pencils for those students who may not have them
  4. Transparencies to help students with planning their flow maps and to demonstrate where the Roman Empire was located.
  5. Create the PowerPoint quiz to be taken on day 5

Teacher Instructions for Day 1 Monday:
  1. Take attendance
  2. Pass out worksheets to students
  3. Have students take out their school provided laptops and power up
  4. Using their laptops have them open up inspiration so that they can create their flow maps
  5. Put up a transparency that has a blank flow map on it. Demonstrate an example of how they could fill their flow maps.
  6. Have them work on researching, preparing, and creating their flow maps
  7. While they are working show the History of the World in 7 minutes video so that they have an example to go by. Feel free to repeat the video so that as they work they can use it as a guide for the last activity for today’s class.
  8. Once they are done creating their flow maps they should begin creating a storyboard based on their flow maps. To create a digital video of the history events they chose to put on their timelines and flow maps. This should include what images they will be using, what audio they would like to use, what transitions they would like to include.
  9. Once their storyboards are created they should begin to use Windows Movie Maker to create their movies. This should take until the end of class. They should have work to finish, instruct them to save their work on their flash drives and to complete their videos at home and that the videos will be due along with their flow maps, storyboards on Thursday and they are to be submitted to the class webcourse page as past assignments have been done.

Teacher’s instructions Day 2 Tuesday:
  1. Take Attendance
  2. Instruct students to take out their computers and flash drives
  3. Have them log onto the classroom Wiki and to follow the instructions for Day 2 Tuesday under the student activities page.
  4. This activity should take about 30 minutes leaving 20 minutes to have the students work with the teacher to fill in a transparency on what areas the Roman Empire took up during the height of their rule before the fall of the empire. Choose students randomly to come up with the transparency being projected onto the class white board use dry erase marker to shade in the areas that they conquered. This will help them with understanding the geography of the Roman Empire.


Teacher’s instructions for Day 3- Wednesday
  1. Take attendance
  2. Have the students take out their laptops and flash drives.
  3. Instruct them to open the classroom wikispace page and to go to the student activities page.
  4. Inform students to follow Day 3’s instructions for their activities for the next 25 minutes.
  5. For the last 25 minutes start the Episodes from Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire starting with Julius Caesar.

Teacher Instructions for Day 4-Thursday
  1. Take attendance
  2. Take out the TV/DVD player and start watching the DVD Rome: the Rise and Fall of an Empire. Watch Constantine the Great.
  3. Instruct the students to log onto their computers and into the Classroom Wikispace.
  4. Inform them to read the instructions for Day 4 and to start working on today’s assignment.
  5. Make sure to put out on the classroom table Poster Board, markers, colored pencils and materials that could be used to create the game.
  6. Allow students to work until about 5 minutes before the bell then have them clean up.


Teacher Instruction for Day 5- Friday
  1. Take attendance
  2. Collect assignments
  3. Turn TV/DVD player on and play the movie Rome: Rise and Fall of an Empire The Last Emperor
  4. After the movie ends have students log onto their computers and go into the Classroom Wikispace.
  5. Have the students read the instructions for today’s assignments and quiz

Remind students that any late assignments will have point deductions and games that were not completed and turned in must be done so on Monday.
